Beginners 1–3 and Intermediate 1–3

Build a six-step Salsa level list with two named groups, choose where newcomers are welcome, and put courses on it.

For owners and managers

Outcome: one Salsa level list with six steps, Beginners 1, 2, 3 then Intermediate 1, 2, 3, that your courses and open classes can use.

Who can do this: owners and managers, on the web.

Before you start: Salsa must be ticked under Styles you teach on the School page.

This is how Studio Voorbeeld's Salsa is set up.

Decide first#

QuestionStudio Voorbeeld's answerWhy it matters
How many groups, how many steps each?Beginners × 3, Intermediate × 3Steps are counted straight through, so Intermediate 1 is the fourth step.
Up to where can a complete beginner join?Beginners 1Those steps show No experience needed on their course cards.

Steps#

  1. In the sidebar, open Styles and levels. On the Salsa row, choose Set up levels (or Edit levels if Salsa already has one).
  2. A new list starts as one unnamed group of three steps: Salsa 1, Salsa 2, Salsa 3. In Group name, type Beginners. The steps below it now read Beginners 1, Beginners 2, Beginners 3.
  3. Choose Add a group. It appears at the end of the list, which is the top of the ladder. Name it Intermediate, and use + until it has 3 steps.
  4. Check the order: the list is lowest first. Beginners must be above Intermediate in the sheet. If not, use the arrows to move a group.
  5. Under No experience needed up to, choose Beginners 1.
  6. Choose Save levels. You'll see "Salsa levels saved."

The row on Styles and levels now summarises the six steps.

What the steps mean#

StepNameNext to
1Beginners 1Beginners 2
2Beginners 2Beginners 1, Beginners 3
3Beginners 3Beginners 2, Intermediate 1
4Intermediate 1Beginners 3, Intermediate 2
5Intermediate 2Intermediate 1, Intermediate 3
6Intermediate 3Intermediate 2

Beginners 3 and Intermediate 1 are next to each other even though they're in different groups. That matters for two settings:

  • Fill-ins with One level above too: an Intermediate 1 class can ask Beginners 3 dancers. See Fill-in rules.
  • Catch-ups with One level either side: a Beginners 3 dancer can make up a week in Intermediate 1. See Catch-ups.

With the default rules (fill-ins Only classes at or below their level, catch-ups The same level only), group boundaries don't come into it.

Put courses on the list#

A level list is only the steps. It doesn't create courses. For each course you actually run:

  1. Courses → New course.
  2. Choose Style: Salsa and Level: Beginners 1. The name suggests itself, "Salsa · Beginners 1". You can type your own, but matching always uses the Level field, not the name.
  3. Fill in the rest of the course and publish it. See Course editor.

Studio Voorbeeld runs Beginners 1, Beginners 2 (twice: Tuesday and Thursday) and Intermediate 1. Beginners 3, Intermediate 2 and Intermediate 3 exist on the list but have no course running this term. That's fine, and dancers can still say they're at those levels.

What dancers see#

  • On course cards: Beginners 1 shows No experience needed, because it's inside the newcomer range. Beginners 2 and up show their level name.
  • In their profile: dancers pick their own Salsa level at your school from these six names. You see their choice; you can't set it for them.

Check it worked#

  • Styles and levels shows the six steps in order.
  • Open a course: its Level list shows Beginners and Intermediate as headings, with three steps under each.
  • The public Beginners 1 card says No experience needed, and Beginners 2 says Beginners 2.

Changing your mind#

  • Renaming a group later is safe: everyone on it keeps their step.
  • Reordering or adding steps is safe for your records, but it changes which levels count as next to each other, so fill-ins and catch-ups match differently. If fill-ins are on, the editor previews how many dancers each step would reach before you save.
  • Removing steps asks where the courses and classes on them should move. See G02: Change an existing level list.

If it doesn't work#

  • Save levels stays greyed out. Read the red line above it. The usual cause is two groups where one has no name.
  • Salsa isn't on Styles and levels. Tick it under Styles you teach on the School page first.
  • A course card doesn't say "No experience needed". Check No experience needed up to: the course's step must be at or below it.
